Do I need an eSIM in China if my hotel has Wi-Fi?
Hotel Wi-Fi can help, but it only works within range and commonly restricts overseas apps. A suitable travel eSIM gives you a separate mobile connection outside the hotel. Installing one does not change the hotel’s Wi-Fi.
You arrive in Shanghai, join the hotel Wi-Fi and see full signal — yet your WhatsApp message home will not send. A strong signal means you are connected to the router; it does not mean every online service is reachable.
Does your trip need another mobile connection?
Answer two questions before buying. If your existing plan already meets your China needs, you may not need another eSIM. Hotel Wi-Fi alone cannot keep you online outside its range.
For example, to open a booking, contact your companion or check a route while out.
Choose Yes only after checking coverage, dates, allowance and charges with your provider. A European allowance alone is not confirmation.
Start with your actual travel plans
Choose an answer to both questions. This is planning guidance, not a check of your phone, hotel or mobile contract.
Your choices stay on this page and reset when you leave or change language. Nothing is saved or sent by this check.

Check your existing plan before buying another
A suitable China roaming pass or travel data plan may already cover the connection you need.
- Confirm mainland China and every stop on your itinerary, including the travel dates. Hong Kong coverage is a separate question.
- Check the remaining allowance, any daily speed limits and the services you need with that provider.
- Save the provider’s setup and support instructions offline. If the plan meets your needs, a second purchase is optional.
Wi-Fi and offline preparation may suit your plan
If you can wait to get online until a working Wi-Fi stop, you may choose to travel without an extra data plan. Be ready for a login problem or an unavailable app.
- Save your hotel address, booking and arrival instructions on your phone before leaving. Open them once without internet to check they are available.
- Ask the hotel how guests log in and what you need for access. Do not assume an SMS login will work with a data-only eSIM.
- Decide what you will do if Wi-Fi is unavailable: wait, ask reception for help, or arrange a mobile option before you depend on it.
Compare a mobile option for time outside the hotel
You expect to need internet between Wi-Fi stops and have no confirmed China data plan. Arrange a suitable connection before you depend on it.
- Check that your phone supports eSIM and is unlocked before choosing a travel eSIM.
- Compare your trip dates and data needs with the live plans below; do not choose a larger allowance just to unlock apps.
- Install with reliable internet and follow your plan’s activation instructions. Keep essential arrival details offline as a backup.
Confirm the missing information first
You do not need to buy a plan just because you are unsure. First decide where you need a connection and check what your existing provider includes.
- Picture the journey from arrival to the hotel: which details can you save offline, and when will you need a live connection?
- Ask your provider whether your exact plan covers mainland China on your dates, what data is included and what it costs.
- If Wi-Fi is your only option, check the hotel login method. Return to these questions once you have the answers.
Hotelowe Wi-Fi to nie wszystko.
Mainland China's internet restricts many overseas services, including Google, WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram and YouTube. Ordinary hotel and café Wi-Fi uses local internet access, so a strong Wi-Fi signal alone doesn't solve this.
Wi-Fi w hotelach i kawiarniach
Your phone → Wi-Fi → local internet
Useful for services available on that network, but limited to its coverage. Installing a travel eSIM doesn't change the hotel's Wi-Fi connection.
Dane mobilne OrientPass
Your phone → mobile network → Hong Kong routing
OrientPass's mainland-China-only plans use international roaming through Hong Kong. This provides a different data route for your everyday internet use, with mobile coverage when you leave the hotel.
Access to individual apps depends on the routing and the service itself. An eSIM is not a guarantee that every app or feature will always work.
Why does the data route matter?
Connected to hotel Wi-Fi, but still offline?
Check the hotel login before changing your eSIM. A Wi-Fi symbol only shows a connection to the router. A missing login, a network outage and one unavailable app need different next steps.
Start with what you see
A welcome page or SMS login appears
No login page appears and nothing loads
Some websites load, but one app does not
It worked on mobile data, then stopped again in the hotel
Before you travel: save your hotel address, booking and eSIM installation instructions offline. An uncompleted hotel login is not a working connection for installing an eSIM.
WhatsApp stops loading on hotel Wi-Fi? Try this
Check which SIM will use mobile data
Select your travel eSIM for mobile data. Enable roaming for that eSIM as instructed. Keep home-SIM data roaming and automatic data switching off to avoid an unintended home-carrier data connection.
Switch Wi-Fi off and retry
In your phone’s settings, switch Wi-Fi off, wait for a mobile connection and try the same app again. This uses your eSIM allowance. If it works, the hotel connection was the difference; your eSIM has not changed that network.
If it still fails, separate app and connection problems
Try opening another website. If nothing loads, check signal, remaining data and your installation instructions. If only one app fails, regional restrictions or an account issue may be involved. Do not delete the eSIM to troubleshoot.
Compare two fixed allowances for mobile use
These are current mainland-China plans with confirmed Hong Kong routing. Choose by your trip length and expected data use; a larger allowance does not unlock more apps. Network and routing below come from the live catalog.
Hong Kong routing is separate from hotel Wi-Fi. It is not VPN software and does not guarantee every app, account or feature. The supplier flags regional restrictions including TikTok and Facebook. 5G depends on local coverage and a compatible device.

Your departure checklist
Check your exact phone model
Your phone needs eSIM support and must be unlocked. Regional versions of the same model can differ. Check before buying.
Install on a stable connection
Save your installation instructions and set up the eSIM before departure. Follow the activation details for your chosen plan.
Save the essentials offline
Keep your hotel address in Chinese, booking references and arrival instructions on your phone. Download an offline translation pack if your app supports it.
Prepare your everyday apps
Sign in before travelling and check your account recovery options. Set up the local transport or payment apps you intend to use; mobile data alone doesn't complete their registration.
When you land
- Select the travel eSIM for mobile data and enable data roaming for that eSIM.
- Keep data roaming off for your home SIM and turn off automatic mobile-data switching to avoid unintended home-carrier data charges.
- Let the eSIM connect to a supported mobile network. Then try sending a message or opening a booking.
An app stops loading after joining hotel Wi-Fi? Turn Wi-Fi off briefly and try again on your travel eSIM's mobile data. Your eSIM cannot reroute the hotel's Wi-Fi.
China + Hong Kong / Macao
Can I use the same eSIM in China and Hong Kong?
A China plan that routes data through Hong Kong does not automatically cover Hong Kong. Check the listed destinations for every stop. Our current China, Hong Kong and Macao offers are separate destination plans.

Do I need a Hong Kong eSIM just for an airport layover?
Not necessarily. If you stay in the terminal and only need occasional messages, airport Wi-Fi may be enough. For mobile data away from Wi-Fi, choose a plan that explicitly covers Hong Kong. A mainland-China plan with a Hong Kong internet exit is not the same thing.
Staying in the terminal
Save your boarding pass, onward-flight details and installation email offline before leaving Europe. You can decide to use airport Wi-Fi without buying a second data plan just for the connection.
Going into the city or needing mobile data
Check Hong Kong coverage before purchase. Compare allowance, validity and activation rules with your stopover length. A Hong Kong-only plan will not cover the mainland leg; the separate current offers are shown below.
Connect to the airport Wi-Fi
- Keep mobile data off to avoid unintended roaming. Select #HKAirport Free WiFi; if absent, try Wi-Fi.HK via HKAirport.
- Open a browser to trigger the sign-in page, read the terms and choose Agree and Continue. The airport says registration is not required.
No connection? Toggle Wi-Fi off and on, then retry. Ask the airport customer service counter if it still fails. Free Wi-Fi covers most terminal seating and public areas, not every place you may visit.
Airport Wi-Fi instructions ↗Before your onward flight: keep the mainland eSIM installed. Select the right data line when you reach mainland China and follow your order’s activation instructions. Airport Wi-Fi does not extend your plan’s coverage or validity.
Crossed the border? Choose the right data line.
After arriving in mainland China, select your installed China eSIM for mobile data. In Hong Kong or Macao, select a plan covering that stop. Changing the data line does not change a plan’s coverage or pause its expiry.
Before travelling, install and label each required profile while online, following its activation rules. Check how many lines your phone can keep active. If you must turn off another line, decide which service you can be without; turning off your home SIM stops its ordinary calls and texts.
iPhone
- Open Settings → Cellular / Mobile Data → Cellular Data. Choose the installed travel line for your current destination.
- Keep Allow Cellular Data Switching off if you do not want another line to take over data. Follow the selected plan’s roaming instructions.
Samsung Galaxy
- Open Settings → Connections → SIM manager → Mobile data. Select the installed travel eSIM covering your current destination.
- Confirm the selected data line and follow its roaming instructions. Check any automatic data-switching option separately; its name and availability vary by model.
Google Pixel
- Open Settings → Network & internet → SIMs. Under Your primary SIMs, choose Mobile data and select the travel line for this stop.
- Only one SIM is the default for data. Turn off Automatic data switching if you do not want another line to take over. Follow the selected plan’s roaming instructions.
Check before leaving Wi-Fi behind
Away from a call, turn Wi-Fi off briefly and open a small webpage. Recheck the selected data line. This checks mobile internet now, not every app or the whole journey. If it fails, reconnect to trusted Wi-Fi for the checks below.
The destination line is missing or cannot be selected
Check the saved profiles and your model’s supported SIM combination. Menu names vary by software and region. Keep installed profiles; do not delete one or rescan its code to switch lines. Use the installation help if the expected profile is absent.
Find an installed eSIM →Keep home-line data roaming off and check your home carrier’s conditions separately. Switching travel lines does not remove call, SMS or voicemail charges, transfer unused data, or restart either plan’s validity.

From Hong Kong to mainland China: what to do
Before you leave home
Check coverage and activation rules for every stop. Save each installation email offline and label the profiles China, Hong Kong or Macao. Follow your phone’s installation instructions while you have internet.
After crossing the border
Choose the eSIM for your new destination as the mobile data line. Follow that plan’s data-roaming instructions. Keep data switching and home-line data roaming off to reduce accidental home-carrier data use.
Check the connection before continuing
With Wi-Fi off, open a webpage. If it fails, check the selected line, supported destination, remaining data and validity. Keep the installed profile while troubleshooting. Returning to China? Check the China plan is still valid and has data; switching lines does not pause its expiry.
