United States eSIM data plans

Travelling to the United States? Choose a data plan for your trip, then install the eSIM on a compatible, unlocked phone before departure.

Is 5 GB or 10 GB enough for the USA?

For the USA, choose 5 GB only when your whole-trip estimate fits within it; choose 10 GB for a larger estimate. Check travel days too: extra data does not extend validity.

Use your own recent mobile-data total over a known period. Your home tariff allowance is not the amount you actually used. Compare your estimate with the current plans below; nothing is selected automatically.

This budgets one data-only eSIM for the USA. It does not cover the other side of the USA–Canada border. It predicts neither speed nor app access. Check whether your home carrier already includes suitable roaming before buying.

Can I use one of these plans in both the USA and Canada?

No. These USA and Canada plans each cover one country. Their data allowances are separate and cannot be transferred. For a two-country trip, check your existing roaming or a plan that explicitly covers both countries.

  1. Before buying

Split your travel days and expected usage by country. Check whether your home plan already covers either stop. If you choose separate eSIMs, check how many profiles your exact phone can store and use; do not delete a working eSIM to make room without advice.

  2. Before crossing the border

Install and label each purchased line using stable internet and its private order instructions. Keep maps and instructions saved. A country name or internet-exit country is not proof of cross-border coverage.

  3. After arriving in the next country

Select that country’s installed eSIM for mobile data and follow its data-roaming instructions. Disable automatic mobile-data switching and keep home-line data roaming off. Briefly turn Wi-Fi off and open a small webpage; this uses some data.

Each selected country plan starts with its own first supported network connection. Switching a started line off does not pause its validity; returning later does not restart the clock or refill its data.

If the next country has no connection, use Wi-Fi to check the selected line, exact coverage, allowance and order instructions. Keep both eSIMs installed and contact support with the relevant order reference if needed. Do not copy the APN from the other country’s plan.

Calculate from my own usage

Add only sharing not already included in your measured phone total. Daily mode repeats the amount for every travel day. For only some laptop days, enter their combined trip total instead. Leave 0 when no extra sharing is needed. Changing unit or period reinterprets your number; check the trip total.

An optional assumption applied to baseline plus extra sharing, not a guarantee.

Enter travel days, measured days and usage to compare. No personal usage estimate is prefilled.

(Measured data ÷ measured days × travel days + additional sharing) × 1.2 with the margin on. Daily sharing is multiplied by every travel day. Conversion: 1 GB = 1,024 MB. Counters can differ.

Entries stay in this page’s memory and are cleared on reload. They are not automatically saved or sent by this calculator.

Two travellers: share one plan or use two?

If you stay together, one phone can share its travel data over a hotspot. If you split up, each person needs their own suitable connection. Compare the current options below; the right choice also depends on each person’s data use.

One phone shares a hotspot

10 GB · 30 days per plan

One plan: €24.90

Install this eSIM on the host phone. Connect the second phone by Wi-Fi nearby; both phones use this one allowance. The second phone does not need eSIM support just to join Wi-Fi. It loses this hotspot connection when the host is out of range, off or out of battery.

Two phones with separate eSIMs

Data per phone: 5 GB · 30 days per plan

Comparison total for two separate plans: €27.80€13.90 per plan

Each phone needs eSIM support and no carrier lock. Buy a separate eSIM for each phone and keep its private installation instructions separate. Each plan has its own allowance and activation clock; unused data on one phone cannot be pooled with the other.

For one shared plan, budget both travellers’ use once, including hotspot data. For two plans, estimate each person separately: 5 GB each is not a flexible shared 10 GB balance. Prices shown are current comparisons before any discount code or credit, not bundle discounts.

The individual-plan button opens one plan for one phone. This comparison does not add two items or complete a group purchase. If both people need a plan, complete a separate purchase for each; check each final total before paying.

Prepare and troubleshoot sharing

Before departure, check existing home-plan roaming first. For sharing, test the host phone’s hotspot with the second phone, use a private hotspot password and plan charging. Hotspot support depends on the device and network; no fixed range, speed or number of connected devices is promised.

If sharing fails, check the host phone’s own mobile data first, then its hotspot and the other phone’s Wi-Fi. Use only the APN in your order instructions. If you need to separate, arrange another connection before leaving Wi-Fi; buying more shared data does not give the second phone an independent connection.

Phone online, but laptop offline on its hotspot?

First test the phone with Wi-Fi off using the travel eSIM. If the phone works but the laptop does not, check hotspot settings and reconnect. More data does not repair a failed Wi-Fi connection.

Before testing, select the travel eSIM for mobile data at a covered destination, leave home-line data roaming off and disable automatic data switching. Opening a small webpage uses some data. Restore Wi-Fi after the test if needed.

The phone itself has no mobile internet

First resolve the phone connection: check the selected country, travel line, purchased allowance and validity, and the exact APN in your installation email if required. Keep the eSIM installed. A Wi-Fi icon or mobile signal bars alone do not prove the travel line works.

Open this destination’s arrival settings →
The phone works, but the laptop cannot connect
  1. Keep the phone nearby. Open its hotspot screen, confirm the hotspot is on and read its network name and current password. Keep the password private.
  2. On the laptop, select that exact Wi-Fi network instead of airport or hotel Wi-Fi, then enter the hotspot password. If the hotspot password changed, use the laptop’s option to forget only that saved network, then reconnect.
  3. After connecting, open a small webpage on the laptop. If the phone works but the laptop still fails, check the phone-specific options below. A managed work laptop may need help from IT; do not disable its security controls.
iPhone host · hotspot visibility and compatibility
  1. Open Settings → Personal Hotspot and enable Allow Others to Join. Stay on that screen while the laptop connects.
  2. On iPhone 12 or later, try Maximize Compatibility if the laptop cannot connect. Retest after changing it; performance and Wi-Fi security may be reduced. This is not a speed upgrade.

Pixel host · check Data Saver
  1. If Data Saver is on, turn it off before using a Wi-Fi hotspot: Settings → Network & internet → Data Saver. Background apps may now use more mobile data.
  2. Open Network & internet → Hotspot & tethering → Wi-Fi hotspot, enable it and confirm the network name and password. Menus vary by Android version.
  3. Reconnect and retest the laptop. When you stop sharing, turn the hotspot off and restore Data Saver if you want its background-data restrictions.

Both work, but data is disappearing quickly

Disconnect the laptop hotspot while checking optional backups, downloads and background activity. Then use the existing Windows or Mac controls below. Hotspot traffic uses the same travel allowance; the phone counter is not a verified remaining balance.

Before connecting a laptop
  1. Use your own laptop usage or a known trip total, not a universal “GB per meeting” estimate. Keep large backups and downloads on suitable Wi-Fi, if you can. Do not add laptop data again if the measured phone total already includes that hotspot use.
  2. On Windows 11, open Settings → Network & internet → Wi-Fi → the hotspot network and enable Metered connection. It can reduce some background traffic, not stop all usage or guarantee a quota. A managed laptop may need IT help; other systems have different controls.
  3. During the trip, monitor the travel line’s actual usage. If it rises unexpectedly, disconnect the laptop hotspot and check background activity on Wi-Fi before continuing. A planning result is not the provider’s remaining balance.
Windows 11: set a data-use reminder for the hotspot

Set a warning for the laptop’s own hotspot connection and keep a separate reserve for your phone. Windows warns as usage approaches or exceeds your chosen amount; keep checking the eSIM allowance and disconnect if necessary.

  1. Connect to the intended phone hotspot. Open Start → Settings → Network & internet → Wi-Fi, then select that connected network. Choose “Set a data limit to help control data usage on this network”. Labels can vary by Windows version.
  2. Choose “Enter limit”, the appropriate limit type and period, then enter the amount and save. Use only the data you have budgeted for this laptop. Allow for data already used and phone activity; the plan’s full 5 GB or 10 GB is not automatically the laptop’s remaining budget.
  3. Keep Metered connection enabled for this hotspot. A warning does not guarantee that all traffic stops. If a warning appears, disconnect the laptop and check the travel line’s actual allowance before continuing. Review or remove this local limit when the trip or network changes.

Windows sees this computer’s network use. It cannot account for other hotspot devices or all use on the phone, and it does not reset or refill your eSIM. A missing setting or managed work laptop needs Windows or IT help; do not assume a limit has been applied.

Microsoft · Windows network data limits ↗
Mac: reduce hotspot use and check transfers

Your Mac uses the same travel data allowance as your phone. Enable Low Data Mode for the hotspot, then check whether transfers are still running. Keep a separate allowance for the phone and other devices.

  1. Connect the Mac to the intended phone hotspot. Open System Settings → Wi-Fi → Details beside that network, then enable Low Data Mode. Menus and availability vary by macOS version.
  2. Open Activity Monitor → Network. Choose Data above the graph if it shows packets. Data received/sec and Data sent/sec are transfer rates; the received and sent totals are traffic volumes.
  3. Pause an unnecessary download or cloud transfer in its own app, then check activity again. Disconnect the Mac from the hotspot when finished. Resume important updates and backups on trusted Wi-Fi.

Low Data Mode is not a hard cap. Activity Monitor is not your eSIM balance or a precise counter for this hotspot alone; other connections can affect its figures. Data already used is not restored. Do not force-quit unfamiliar processes or bypass work-device controls. If a setting is missing or managed, disconnect and ask IT.

Find a reliable usage record
  1. On iPhone, open Settings → Cellular / Mobile Data. Use the selected data line and confirm the period; Current Period is not automatically the last month. On Pixel, open Settings → Network & internet → SIMs → App data usage and select a period. Menus vary.
  2. Use mobile data actually consumed, not Wi-Fi usage or your tariff’s included GB. If no reliable record is available, compare the plans directly; this tool cannot invent your personal usage.
  3. Before departure, save maps and media over Wi-Fi where the app permits it. During the trip, check the travel line’s usage and keep enough data for your next step; a phone counter is not a verified remaining balance.

How can I reduce background data on my phone?

Check the travel data line and the apps using it before choosing a larger plan. A data-saving mode can reduce background traffic; it does not stop data used by apps you are actively using or guarantee that 5 GB will be enough.

iPhone · Low Data Mode
  1. Open Settings → Cellular / Mobile Data. With two SIMs, select your USA or Canada travel line, not the home line. Turn on Low Data Mode; for a 5G line, look under Cellular Data Options → Data Mode. Labels depend on your iOS version and carrier.
  2. Expect some automatic downloads, backups and photo updates to pause or change. Open the apps you need and check they still work for your trip; resume postponed sync later on a Wi-Fi network you trust.
Apple · iPhone Low Data Mode ↗
Google Pixel · Data Saver
  1. Open Settings → Network & internet → SIMs, choose the travel data SIM and inspect App data usage for a known period. The app list helps identify what is consuming mobile data; do not use your included allowance as the measured usage.
  2. Open Settings → Network & internet → Data Saver and turn it on. Most background traffic is then restricted to Wi-Fi; active apps can still use mobile data. To share a Wi-Fi hotspot on Pixel, turn Data Saver off first; see the hotspot connection check on this page.
  3. If an essential app no longer updates in the background, open Data Saver → Unrestricted data and allow only the apps you need. Those exceptions can use extra mobile data. Check the app again and restore your usual settings after the trip.
Google · Pixel Data Saver ↗

These settings are not a data cap, a refill or a verified remaining balance. Phone measurements can differ from the provider’s figures. If usage keeps rising, stop optional downloads and hotspot sharing, use trusted Wi-Fi and contact support with your order reference to check the plan. Do not delete the eSIM as a usage fix. Other Android brands and managed phones have different menus; use the manufacturer’s instructions or ask IT.

When should I install my USA eSIM?

Install before you fly, using reliable internet. For the USA plans shown here, the 30-day validity starts when the eSIM first connects to a supported network in the United States—not when you install it at home.

The unused activation window is 180 days. This is time to start the plan, not extra days of mobile data. Ask support if you are unsure which start-by date applies to your order.

Choose a USA plan ↓
My US QR code is on this phone. How do I install it?

Use a supported same-phone method or your order’s manual details; you do not need to scan your own screen. First check whether the US profile is already installed. Keep a stable internet connection during installation.

Use the unlocked, eSIM-compatible phone that will use this order. Open your own installation email, not a screenshot from another traveller. Adding the travel line does not transfer your home number. Do not choose a home-SIM conversion or transfer option.

A US profile is already listed — should I scan again?

Do not install it again just because it shows no service before travel. Match the profile to your private order instructions; a label alone is not proof. Keep it installed. For the current US plans, the validity starts at the first supported-network connection in the US, not when the profile is added.

Before departure and on arrival
  1. Before your flight

Check eSIM support and carrier unlock. Install from your private order email over stable Wi-Fi, label the line USA, then leave it off until arrival. Save the instructions offline; keep the QR code private.

  2. After landing in the USA

Turn on the USA eSIM and select it for mobile data. Enable data roaming on this travel line as instructed. If using it instead of your home plan, disable home-line data roaming and automatic mobile-data switching. Menu names vary by phone.

  3. Check the connection

Briefly turn Wi-Fi off and open a small webpage. It uses some plan data. Once the first supported connection starts the plan, switching the line off does not pause its validity. Contact support with your order reference if you need the exact expiry checked.

Installed, but still no internet?

Before arrival, installation alone does not establish a USA mobile connection. After arrival, check the selected data line, its roaming setting and local coverage, then restart the phone. Use only the APN from your order instructions. Do not delete the eSIM or buy a replacement as your first fix; reconnect to Wi-Fi and contact support if it still fails.

After landing: choose your phone and save the steps

Choose your phone to see its data-line menu and download a USA arrival card before flying. Open the saved file in flight mode to check it works. It contains public instructions, not your private installation code.

Use an eSIM-compatible, unlocked phone. Menu names vary with software and region. The file is for an already installed USA eSIM; it does not install one or replace your private order instructions. If saving fails, take screenshots of the displayed steps before departure.

iPhone
  1. Open Settings → Cellular (or Mobile Data) → Cellular Data and choose your installed USA travel eSIM.
  2. For that travel line, enable Data Roaming as instructed. Keep home-line Data Roaming off and turn Allow Cellular Data Switching off.
  3. If an iOS travel-eSIM prompt appears, confirm the intended data line. Keeping both lines on can still incur home-provider charges.

After saving, open the file from Files or Downloads with flight mode on. This webpage itself is not available offline. Do not put your QR code into a public note.

After arrival, turn flight mode off, briefly turn Wi-Fi off and open a small webpage. This uses some data. If it fails, reconnect to Wi-Fi, check the chosen data line and its roaming setting, then restart. Keep the eSIM installed; use only the APN from your order instructions. Contact support with your order reference if it still fails.

Home-line calls and SMS retain your provider’s conditions. Selecting travel data does not make them free; check the Germany, Austria or Switzerland carrier links below before travelling.

Can I receive bank texts with this USA eSIM?

No. These USA plans provide mobile data, not a phone number or ordinary SMS. Keep access to the number registered with your bank. Buying more data will not deliver a missing verification code.

Choose the situation you need help with. An internet message in an app is different from an SMS sent to your phone number.

Before travel: keep access to my bank
  1. Check that your exact phone can keep your home SIM and travel eSIM active together. If not, arrange another supported way to access your bank before departure.
  2. Check USA roaming and SMS availability with your home carrier. Select the travel eSIM for mobile data, leave home-line data roaming off and disable automatic data switching as described above. This does not block voice or SMS charges.
  3. Open your bank app before departure and check its supported backup authentication or recovery method. Keep access to your registered number; do not replace it with a number shown in a data-eSIM setting.
Internet works, but the bank code does not arrive
  1. Confirm the bank is sending to your usual registered number. Check that its SIM is switched on and has service. A working travel-data connection does not prove that your home line is registered on a US network.
  2. If your home line has no service, restart the phone and ask your home carrier to check USA roaming, device compatibility and account restrictions. Leave the travel eSIM installed; changing its APN cannot fix delivery to a different number.
  3. If the home line has service but the code is still missing, use a backup method your bank supports or contact the bank through its official app or website. Do not share verification codes with eSIM support.
I need a US phone number or ordinary calls
  1. These plans do not provide a US number, ordinary calls or SMS. Check your home carrier’s calling terms, or choose a service that explicitly includes the number and calling features you need.
  2. A messenger that is already registered can use an internet connection, subject to its own account and service conditions. Registering again can require access to your original number; travel data does not replace that verification.
Can I keep my WhatsApp number with a US data eSIM?

Yes. Your existing WhatsApp account can use US travel data while keeping its registered number. These data-only plans do not provide a new number or receive verification codes. Keep access to your original number for account recovery.

Choose what you see in WhatsApp. Switching the internet connection is different from changing or registering an account.

I am already signed in with my usual number
  1. Before departure, open WhatsApp settings and check the number shown in your profile. Keep that account; adding travel data does not require WhatsApp’s Change number feature.
  2. Select the US travel eSIM for mobile data using the arrival settings below. If asked about a different number, keep your existing account rather than registering a number shown in the travel-line settings. Wording varies by app version.
  3. Send a short test message after connecting. WhatsApp messages and calls use your data allowance; an ordinary call in the phone’s dialler is a separate service.
WhatsApp asks me to verify a phone number
  1. Check that the number is your own WhatsApp-registered number, including its country code. Reinstalling the app, signing in again or moving phones may require account verification; more travel data does not supply that code.
  2. Use only a verification or recovery method offered by the official WhatsApp app. For SMS or a phone call, your registered-number line needs the necessary service. Check US roaming availability and prices with its carrier first; travel-eSIM data roaming does not enable SMS on another line.
  3. Do not put an eSIM QR code, SM-DP+ address or LPA activation string into WhatsApp. Never send a WhatsApp verification code to OrientPass support or post it publicly. If the code is missing, follow WhatsApp’s official help instead of repeatedly retrying or buying another data plan.
WhatsApp works on Wi-Fi, but not on travel data
  1. After arrival, disconnect Wi-Fi briefly and try a small website. This uses some plan data. If it also fails, follow the US connection-help link below before buying more data.
  2. If websites load but WhatsApp does not, check that the app is allowed to use mobile data and follow its official connection/account help. A working website is not a guarantee that every app or account feature is available.
  3. Reconnect to trusted Wi-Fi if you need help. Keep the eSIM installed and the current WhatsApp account intact while checking; do not delete either as a first troubleshooting step.

Your home number remains a separate service. Keeping a WhatsApp account does not make home-line calls, SMS, roaming or account recovery free. Check your exact home tariff.

Reviewed on 22 October 2026 using WhatsApp, Airalo and Nomad guidance and the current US data-only catalog. App menus may differ; no handset, app-access or network test.

Internet stops when I answer a call on my home number

A home-line call can temporarily interrupt travel-eSIM data on a dual-SIM phone. Wait until the call ends and check again. This alone does not prove your USA data allowance is used up; a larger plan does not change dual-SIM behaviour.

  1. 1. Before going out

Save your hotel address and booking details offline. Check the USA price of incoming calls, voicemail and carrier Wi-Fi calling with your home provider. Turning off home-line data roaming does not block voice charges. Do not place a chargeable test call.

  2. 2. After the call ends

In the United States, keep the travel eSIM selected for mobile data, with the roaming setting required by your order instructions. Leave home-line data roaming and automatic data switching off. Briefly turn Wi-Fi off and open a small webpage; return to working Wi-Fi if it does not load.

  3. 3. Follow what you observe

If browsing returns, record that the interruption happened during a home-line call. If it stays offline, use the linked USA arrival steps and then connection help. Keep the eSIM installed. More data is only relevant if you separately confirm an exhausted allowance; do not buy a replacement just because a call interrupted it.

iPhone: check the selected data line

Open Settings → Cellular / Mobile Data → Cellular Data and confirm the travel line. Apple says that with Allow Cellular Data Switching off, data does not work during a call on the other voice line. Apple also says switching does not work while using Data Roaming, so enabling it is not a reliable travel fix.

Manufacturer instructions ↗
Pixel: behaviour depends on the model

Open Settings → Network & internet → SIMs to review your data line. Google distinguishes Pixel 8 / 8 Pro and earlier from Pixel 8a and later. Data during calls and two-line calling have different requirements. Do not turn on home-line mobile data or automatic switching as a blanket fix; use the guide for your exact model. Other Android phones need their manufacturer’s instructions.

Manufacturer instructions ↗

An ordinary call to your home number uses that carrier’s voice service. An app call uses an internet connection and its own account conditions. Carrier Wi-Fi calling is a separate phone-number service with carrier terms; it is not the same as an app call. These USA plans remain data-only: no US number or ordinary voice minutes, and no guarantee of uninterrupted calls or app availability.
