Your China data plan
How much data do you need in China?
Start with your recent mobile-data usage, scale it to your trip length and allow for changes such as hotspot sharing. Compare both the data allowance and validity; travel duration alone cannot tell you how many GB you need.
The short answer
A fixed data plan suits usage that varies from day to day. A daily plan suits you if you want a high-speed allowance each day and can accept reduced speeds afterwards. Compare both your total needs and your busiest data days.
Estimate from your own data use
Use a recent mobile-data total and the number of days it covers. Scale it to your trip, then compare both allowance and validity. Your home usage is a starting point, not a promise of what China will require.
I do not know my mobile data usage
You can compare plans without inventing a number. A home tariff’s included allowance is not the amount you actually used.
- Check your operator’s app or bill for data actually used and the dates it covers. An unlimited tariff still does not tell this calculator your consumption.
- If you use your phone’s counter, verify the selected line and time period first. Save the reading before resetting; a reset cannot recover earlier daily usage.
- If you have no useful record, compare fixed total data with a daily high-speed allowance below. Consider your trip length, video uploads and hotspot sharing. No universal GB amount can guarantee enough data.
See a calculation example
Example only: 3.5 GB used over 7 measured days scales to 7 GB over a 14-day trip. With no extra sharing and the optional 20% margin, that becomes 8.4 GB. These are invented teaching values, not a recommended amount for every traveller.
Start with your own figures. Entries are not automatically saved or sent. You can copy a planning note yourself once the estimate is complete.
Choose the unit shown beside your usage: MB or GB. The number stays as entered when you change the unit. This calculator uses 1,024 MB = 1 GB; for example, 512 MB is 0.5 GB. Results are planning estimates, not your operator’s billing record.
Add only sharing that is not already included in your measured mobile use. Choose a whole-trip total or an amount for each day in mainland China. Switching the period keeps your number and recalculates the total. Leave 0 if you need no extra sharing.
How do I estimate extra sharing?
- Estimate the additional data your laptop or companion will use through this phone. Use a known usage record where possible; do not count the same traffic twice.
- Example: 0.5 GB extra on each of 10 travel days is 5 GB for the trip. If you share only on some days, add those days yourself and choose The whole trip. These are calculation examples, not typical use per person.
- If you will split up, separate eSIMs may suit you better. This calculator budgets one shared connection; hotspot availability depends on the phone and network.
Optional assumption, not a guarantee. The margin applies to baseline usage plus additional sharing.
Enter your travel days, measured days and mobile data used to see an estimate. No plan is selected for you yet.
This estimates total data for one eSIM. It does not predict app access, speed or daily peaks. A daily high-speed allowance can run out on a busy day even when the trip average looks low.
Keep your estimate for later
Copy this note into your own notes app or send it yourself to a travel companion. It records one eSIM budget, not a separate allowance for each person. Changing language or reloading clears your entries.
Complete valid entries above to create your note. Nothing is copied automatically.
Where do I find the numbers?
- Use your mobile operator’s usage record for a known period, or your phone’s mobile-data settings. Enter the actual number of days, not automatically a month.
- On iPhone: Settings → Cellular / Mobile Data. Check the counter’s period; “Current Period” is not necessarily the last seven days. On Pixel: Settings → Network & internet → SIMs → App data usage. Menus vary by phone.
- Count mobile data, not your home Wi-Fi total. If you normally stream on Wi-Fi, allow for that traffic moving to mobile data in China. Include data shared with another phone or laptop.

Method and sources
The calculation is arithmetic from your entries, not a traveller survey or network test. Airalo and Holafly already discuss travel-data selection. This tool connects your estimate to current OrientPass fixed plans, without assuming universal data use per app.
One allowance or a daily quota?
Fixed data plan
One data allowance for your trip
Use the included data as needed within the plan validity. Useful when some days use much more data than others.
Daily plan
High-speed data each day
Each allowance cycle includes a high-speed quota. After that, you continue at reduced speeds. The allowance renews on the carrier's reset cycle.
Unlimited does not mean unlimited high speed. Each plan shows its daily high-speed allowance and the reduced speed afterwards. Actual speeds depend on network conditions.
Will a daily plan cover your busiest day?
A low trip average can hide one heavy day. Compare the data you expect to use on your busiest day, including laptop or shared hotspot use, with the daily high-speed allowance.
Use your own device readings or a planning estimate. For example, enter 2.5 for a day with 2.5 GB of combined phone and hotspot use. This is not added to the whole-trip estimate above.
Enter your busiest-day estimate to compare current daily plans.
This is a planning check, not a usage forecast. Daily cycles follow the carrier’s rules and may not match midnight where you are. Reset timing for these specific plans is not confirmed here. Do not assume unused daily data rolls over or that an overnight download is split into two allowances.

Laptop & shared data
Can two people share one China eSIM?
Yes, through a compatible phone’s hotspot while you stay nearby. Both devices use the same data allowance. If you split up, the second traveller needs a separate connection. Install the eSIM on one phone only.
The host phone must stay connected, nearby and charged. Shared usage counts towards the same fixed or daily allowance; any daily slowdown also affects connected devices. Device and network limits apply.
Hotspot missing or not connecting? ↓Connect a laptop by USB ↓One connection, one shared allowance
A larger fixed plan gives you a shared pool. A daily plan may suit a regular routine if its daily high-speed quota covers both devices. If one device uses the quota, the reduced speed applies to the shared connection too.
Compare the validity with your full trip and the allowance with everyone’s combined use. These are individual plans, not a two-person bundle.

The host phone has no data: connection help →My hotspot is not workingFind the right fix for a missing network, rejected password, no internet or a dropped connection.
My phone has internet. Why will my laptop not connect?
Check whether the hotspot is missing, rejects the password or connects without internet. These are different problems. Buying more data will not fix a Wi-Fi connection problem when the host phone already has working mobile data.
The hotspot does not appear in the Wi-Fi list
Keep the devices close and open the hotspot settings on the host phone.
- iPhone 12 or later: in Personal Hotspot, enable Allow Others to Join and try Maximise Compatibility. Keep this screen open while connecting.
- Samsung Galaxy: in Mobile Hotspot settings, check that Hidden network is off. If available, try the 2.4 GHz band for wider device compatibility.
- On the laptop or second phone, turn Wi-Fi off and back on, then select the hotspot name shown on the host.
Compatibility settings can reduce performance; Apple also warns of reduced Wi-Fi security. Keep password protection on. Options vary by model and software.
What happens when you try again?
Choose a different problem ↑I can see it, but the password is rejected
Use the hotspot’s Wi-Fi password, not your phone PIN or eSIM installation code.
- Read the current password from the host phone’s hotspot settings. Check the network name before entering it again.
- If you changed the password, reconnect each device using the new one. Restart both devices if connection still fails.
Keep the password private. Do not send your eSIM QR code to another device to solve this problem.
Laptop still using an old hotspot password?
Forget the saved hotspot on your laptop, then join it again with the current Wi-Fi password from your phone. Keep the travel eSIM installed.
Save any online work first: removing the saved network disconnects that Wi-Fi connection. Check the exact hotspot name and current password on your phone before you start.
Windows 11
- Open Settings → Network & internet → Wi-Fi → Manage known networks. Find your phone’s hotspot and choose Forget.
- Select that hotspot again from the available Wi-Fi networks and enter its current password.
Mac
- Open System Settings → Wi-Fi → Advanced. Beside your phone’s saved hotspot, open More Options → Remove From List and confirm Forget.
- Choose the hotspot again in Wi-Fi and enter the current password. Menu wording can vary with macOS.
On Apple devices using iCloud Keychain with the same Apple Account, forgetting this Wi-Fi network also removes it from the other devices. On a managed laptop, ask IT if the option is unavailable.
Once connected, open an ordinary webpage. If the password is accepted but the laptop is offline, use the connection check below. Do not reset all network settings or delete the eSIM for a saved-password problem.
What happens when you try again?
Choose a different problem ↑It says connected, but no website opens
First turn Wi-Fi off on the host phone and check whether a normal webpage opens using the travel eSIM.
- If the host is also offline, use the connection-help link below to check the selected SIM, required roaming, coverage and allowance.
- If the host works, confirm the laptop joined your hotspot rather than hotel Wi-Fi. Reconnect and test another ordinary webpage. Follow only the APN instructions supplied with your eSIM.
If only a work service fails, ask your IT team about access rules. Hotspot support does not guarantee every site or company service. Do not disable managed security settings.
What happens when you try again?
Choose a different problem ↑It connects, then disappears or drops out
Check distance, battery and whether hotspot sharing is still enabled on the host.
- Bring the devices together and reopen hotspot settings. Reconnect after confirming the host still has mobile data.
- On Samsung, check the hotspot’s automatic timeout setting if it turns off while unused. Choose a suitable timeout and switch sharing off when finished.
For separate outings, each traveller needs an independent connection or available Wi-Fi. A larger allowance does not extend hotspot range.

Connect a laptop by USBCheck your phone and computer combination before relying on a cable.
Can I share my China eSIM with a laptop by USB?
Yes, with a compatible phone, computer and hotspot-enabled plan. The phone stays connected to mobile data; the cable only replaces the local Wi-Fi link. Android-to-Mac USB tethering is not supported by Google’s standard instructions.
Before flying, pack a data-capable cable and check the steps for your devices. At your destination, select the travel eSIM for mobile data and check that a webpage loads on the phone with Wi-Fi off. Keep home-line data roaming off.
Choose your phone and computer
Choose both devices to see your steps. If you are unsure, the four guides below remain available.
iPhone → Windows
- Before travel, install the latest Apple Devices or iTunes for Windows while you have internet.
- Enable Allow Others to Join in Personal Hotspot. Connect by USB; approve Trust only on your own trusted computer.
A charging connection alone does not prove that the laptop has internet.
iPhone → Mac
- Enable Personal Hotspot → Allow Others to Join, then connect your iPhone and Mac by USB.
- Approve the accessory on your Mac and Trust on your iPhone if prompted.
Use your own trusted Mac, not a public hotel computer.
Android → Windows
- Connect the phone and computer with a USB data cable.
- Open the phone’s Hotspot & tethering settings and enable USB tethering. Menu names vary by manufacturer and Android version.
If the switch is unavailable, check the cable and your device maker’s instructions. A work laptop may require IT approval.
Android → Mac: use Wi-Fi
- Google’s standard Android instructions do not support USB tethering to a Mac.
- Use the phone’s password-protected Wi-Fi hotspot instead. The Wi-Fi setup guide above covers the phone settings.
Do not depend on unverified drivers or a last-minute workaround for your trip.
A model name alone does not prove compatibility. Check your device maker’s instructions; ask IT before changing a managed laptop.
Check the connection, then disconnect when finished
- Temporarily disconnect the laptop from hotel Wi-Fi and open a webpage. If the phone works but the laptop does not, check the cable, hotspot setting and required software before buying another plan.
- Laptop downloads use the same allowance and speed limits as the phone. The Wi-Fi data-saving settings below apply to Wi-Fi; do not assume they also govern a new USB connection. Check downloads and cloud sync separately.
- When finished, disable tethering and unplug the cable. On iPhone, leaving Personal Hotspot enabled can reconnect the computer when you later plug in to charge.
USB does not add data, improve the mobile signal or guarantee access to a work VPN or any app. Never delete the eSIM to troubleshoot a cable connection. Follow your employer’s device rules.

How do I stop my laptop using up my China eSIM data?
Your laptop connects by Wi-Fi, but its traffic still uses your phone’s eSIM allowance. Set that hotspot connection to metered or low-data mode, then check cloud sync and downloads separately.
Before you leave
On trusted Wi-Fi, finish essential updates and backups and save the files you will need offline. Check that those files open without a connection.
Once your laptop is connected to your phone
Windows 11 · Metered connection
- Open Settings → Network & internet → Wi-Fi, then select your connected phone hotspot.
- Turn on Metered connection. This reduces some background activity; priority updates can still download.
If the switch is locked on a work laptop, ask your IT team.
Set a reminder for this hotspot
- In Settings → Network & internet → Wi-Fi, select the connected phone hotspot. Choose Set a data limit to help control data usage on this network → Enter limit.
- Choose the limit type, enter the amount and period you want to monitor, then save. Windows warns near the limit and when it is exceeded.
Budget for the laptop within the data you still have, leaving room for your phone and other devices. Do not use the full original package size as if it were all still available. If the setting is managed or missing, ask IT; disconnect the laptop when you need to stop sharing.
Microsoft · Set a data limit ↗Microsoft · Metered connections ↗Mac · Low Data Mode
- Open System Settings → Wi-Fi → Details beside the connected phone hotspot.
- Turn on Low Data Mode for that network.
Menu names and availability depend on your macOS version.
Check whether transfers are still running
- Open Activity Monitor on the Mac and select Network. At the bottom, switch the graph to Data if it shows packets.
- Watch Data received/sec and Data sent/sec during a short hotspot session. Received and sent totals show traffic volume; the per-second figures show how fast it is moving.
Pause a nonessential download or sync in its own app, then see whether traffic falls. Do not force-quit unfamiliar system processes or bypass work-device controls. These figures are not your eSIM balance or a precise record of this hotspot alone.
Apple · View network activity ↗Apple · Wi-Fi settings on Mac ↗Which Windows app is using my hotspot right now?
Open Task Manager and check network activity under Processes. Pause a nonessential transfer in the app itself, then look again. This helps find ongoing traffic; it does not show your remaining eSIM allowance.
Save your work and check that the laptop is connected to your phone’s hotspot. Keep the test short: observing traffic still uses data. If little allowance remains, disconnect first and check downloads on trusted Wi-Fi.
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager. Select Processes and look at the Network column beside the apps you recognise.
- Open an app with ongoing traffic and pause its nonessential download, stream or cloud sync using that app’s controls. Return to Task Manager and watch whether its activity falls.
- If needed, select Performance → Wi-Fi to see overall activity on the wireless connection. A quiet moment does not mean transfers will stay stopped; check again before leaving the laptop unattended.
What the numbers do not tell you
Activity or transfer-rate readings are not remaining gigabytes. Task Manager does not know the eSIM balance or the phone’s own use. A browser can include several tabs and downloads; this view does not reliably identify the individual website. Other network connections can also affect what you see.
Unfamiliar process, blank reading or managed laptop?
Do not use End task on unfamiliar Windows processes, stop security services or bypass company controls. A blank or zero reading is not proof of zero usage. Save your work, disconnect the laptop from the hotspot and ask IT if you cannot identify the transfer. Resume essential updates and backups on trusted Wi-Fi.
Microsoft · Task Manager navigation ↗Check the shared eSIM balance →Choose a plan for the data you still need →Pause OneDrive while using your phone hotspot
Pause OneDrive sync for a hotspot session, then resume on trusted Wi-Fi. Check the paused status for each account. The pause expires automatically; it is not a permanent data block.
Before departure, save essential files for offline use and check they open. During a pause, do not assume changes have reached another device or a colleague.
- Right-click the OneDrive cloud in the Windows taskbar, or Control-click it in the Mac menu bar. Choose Pause syncing and select 2, 8 or 24 hours.
- Confirm the cloud shows Paused. Personal and work OneDrive accounts can be paused separately; check each one you use.
After the hotspot session
On trusted Wi-Fi, open the paused cloud and choose Resume syncing. Check the activity panel for completion or errors. Sync also restarts when the selected pause ends, even if you are still using the hotspot.
The cloud icon or pause option is missing?
Use Microsoft’s icon help below. On a managed work device, ask IT. Do not unlink accounts or delete files just to save mobile data. If other transfers continue, review those apps or disconnect the laptop from the hotspot.
This only controls OneDrive sync. Browser downloads, other backup apps and the phone can still use the shared allowance. Pausing does not recover used data or extend your plan.

Pause Drive for desktop and check its sync status before connecting your laptop to the phone hotspot. Prepare needed files on trusted Wi-Fi first. Pausing desktop sync does not stop browser downloads or other apps.
Need a booking PDF offline? While still on trusted Wi-Fi, find it in the Google Drive folder. On Windows, right-click → Offline access → Available offline; on Mac, right-click → Available offline. Wait for it to finish, then check the file opens without internet. Google Docs, Sheets and Slides need separate browser offline setup.
- Open Drive for desktop from the Windows system tray (check hidden icons) or the Mac menu bar. In the redesigned app, use the Pause button; check Sync status to confirm the pause. Older layouts may differ — use Google’s current guide below.
- Check the account shown, especially if you have both work and personal files. Keep the app running when using streamed files saved offline. Avoid opening cloud-only files or starting browser uploads while on the hotspot.
When you have trusted Wi-Fi again
Reconnect the laptop to that Wi-Fi, resume Drive syncing and check the sync status for outstanding work or errors. Until synchronization finishes, an edit saved on this laptop may not be available on another device.
Cannot find the app or confirm it is paused?
Save your work and disconnect the laptop from the hotspot while checking. For a managed work or school computer, ask your administrator. Do not disconnect your Google account or delete files to save data: disconnecting a streaming account removes its offline files.
This controls Drive for desktop, not all laptop traffic. It does not restore used eSIM data or guarantee Google Drive access on every connection in China. Choose a plan for the mobile use you still need, including hotspot use.

Turn off automatic joining for your phone hotspot, then disconnect when finished. Changing a join preference alone does not end the current connection. Choose the Windows or Mac steps below.
Save online work first. Read the hotspot name on your phone so you change the right network.
Windows 11 · Stop automatic hotspot connections
A saved hotspot can reconnect when it comes into range. Disable automatic connection for that network and check that the current connection has ended.
- Save online work and check the hotspot name on your phone. On Windows, open Settings → Network & internet → Wi-Fi → Manage known networks and select that hotspot. Turn off Connect automatically when in range, if shown.
- Open quick settings from the network, sound or battery area of the taskbar. Open the Wi-Fi network list, select your connected phone hotspot and choose Disconnect. Check that it no longer shows Connected before leaving the laptop unattended.
- When you need the hotspot again, select it in the Wi-Fi list. Leave Connect automatically unchecked, then choose Connect. Enter the current hotspot password if asked.
If the option is missing or controlled by your organisation, ask your IT team. To stop Wi-Fi sharing now, disconnect from the hotspot or turn Wi-Fi off on the laptop if you do not need another Wi-Fi connection. USB or Bluetooth sharing is separate.
Keep the travel eSIM installed. These settings neither add data nor stop the phone or other devices using the same allowance. Check the remaining balance before choosing a new plan.
Microsoft · Wi-Fi connections in Windows ↗Cannot reconnect with the saved password? →Check the remaining eSIM data →Mac · Check both joining settings

- Disconnect from the phone hotspot, or turn Wi-Fi off on the Mac if you need no Wi-Fi connection. Check the connected network name before resuming downloads.
If these controls are missing or managed, ask your IT team. To use the hotspot again, select it deliberately. Keep the travel eSIM installed; these Mac settings do not add data or stop the phone’s own usage.
Apple · Wi-Fi and hotspot joining ↗Still using too much data? Check your remaining allowance →If the allowance still drops quickly

A data warning in China: is my eSIM empty?
Not necessarily. A phone warning is not a confirmed plan balance. Check the travel SIM, the counter’s dates and any device data limit before buying more data.
Keep your home SIM’s roaming protections in place. Change only the settings for the intended travel data line. Menu names vary by software version.
What happens after the warning?
Mobile internet still works
A warning can be a reminder set on your phone. It does not tell you how much purchased data remains. Check the selected travel line and warning threshold; keep monitoring usage.
Mobile data stopped at the warning
On Android, a separate device data limit can switch mobile data off. Check whether that limit was reached. Adjust it only after confirming that your plan still has data and is valid. If there is no device limit, or changing it does not help, follow the connection checks.
The phone total does not match my plan
Compare the same travel SIM and dates. A monthly phone cycle or an older iPhone statistics period can include a different time span. Save the reading and its date before resetting a counter. Ask us to check the available supplier record; changing a phone counter restores no data.

- Open Settings → Cellular / Mobile Data. Check that the selected data line is your travel eSIM, then scroll to app usage.
- Check the statistics period before comparing it with your trip. Save the reading before using Reset Statistics if you want a fresh reference for future usage.
- Resetting this counter does not restore plan data or restart validity. Ask support for a plan check when dates or totals do not match.
Keep the eSIM installed. A counter reset is not an eSIM reset.
Samsung Galaxy: warning or automatic data cut-off?
A warning notifies you. An enabled data limit can turn mobile data off.
- Open Settings → Connections → Data usage and check the travel SIM’s mobile usage.
- Open Billing cycle and data warning. Compare the displayed cycle and warning with your travel dates; the phone’s monthly cycle is not your eSIM validity.
- Review Set data limit separately. If it caused the cut-off, confirm your plan balance before adjusting it. Changing a device limit adds no purchased data.
A warning alone does not prove that the package has run out.
Google Pixel: check the travel SIM’s data limit
Pixel can stop mobile data at a limit you set, independently of the provider’s allowance.
- Open Settings → Network & internet → SIMs and select the travel line.
- Open App data usage and choose the relevant period. Review Data warning & limit separately.
- If the device limit caused the interruption and plan data remains, Google’s instructions allow turning off Set data limit to resume mobile data. Keep monitoring usage.
If data still does not work, use connection troubleshooting instead of repeatedly buying or deleting eSIMs.
Still unsure? Note the warning text, selected SIM, counter dates and time of the check. Send your order number to support; crop unrelated personal details from any screenshot. Never share your installation QR or activation code.
How much mobile data have I used since my last check?
Compare two readings from the same phone counter, travel SIM and unchanged statistics period. The difference shows the increase recorded by your phone, not your remaining purchased data.
Save the first reading with its time, SIM and statistics period in your own note or screenshot. Later, read that same total counter again. Do not mix a total with one app’s usage, or readings from different phones.
Where do I find my phone counter? →Enter numbers only, up to three decimal places. A comma or point is accepted as the decimal separator; do not enter thousands separators. Maximum: 999999.
Enter both saved readings to compare them.
Phone and supplier measurements can differ. This does not calculate a live balance, restore data or change validity. Ask support before buying again if the remaining allowance is unclear.
The calculation uses only the values you enter here. It does not read your phone or order. These values are not sent or saved by this tool and clear when you reload or change language.
How do I save data and keep essential apps working?
Limit background data, then check the apps you need for your trip. On Samsung and Pixel, allow selected apps through Data Saver. This can use more data; no setting guarantees message delivery or restores your allowance.
Photo backups using data? Google Photos on Android ↓iPhone · Apple Photos sync is paused ↓Android · Keep app updates on Wi-Fi ↓Will Android app updates use my travel eSIM data?
Yes, if Google Play allows updates over mobile data. Choose Wi-Fi-only updates before travelling. A companion’s hotspot still spends mobile data, and this setting is not a guaranteed cap on all traffic.
Before departure, update essential travel apps on trusted Wi-Fi and open them once. These instructions cover Google Play on Android; other app stores have their own settings.
- In Google Play, tap your profile, then Settings → Network preferences → Auto-update apps. Choose the Wi-Fi-only option; wording can vary.
- If offered, the limited-mobile-data option still permits mobile transfers. Its budget is chosen by Google, not the remaining allowance of your OrientPass plan.
- When back on trusted Wi-Fi, open your profile → Manage apps & device and review available updates. Update essential apps and allow time to finish.
Wi-Fi does not always mean unlimited data
A phone connected to another traveller’s hotspot uses that traveller’s plan for its downloads. Check the connected network before updating. Google can also deliver critical security fixes regardless of update settings; do not treat this as a hard data cap.
Updates wait or the setting is missing?
Check your connection and any account sign-in message. A Wi-Fi-only preference can intentionally defer an update while you use mobile data. Follow Google’s help or your work-device administrator if controls differ; buying more eSIM data does not fix an account error.
Google · Android app updates ↗Check your remaining allowance first →Compare plans for your remaining trip →How do I keep Google Photos backups off my travel data?
On Android, pause automatic backup in Google Photos before using travel data or someone else’s hotspot. Resume it on trusted Wi-Fi and check completion. This does not stop other apps or restore used data.
Check this before departure, while you have trusted Wi-Fi. These steps are for Google Photos on Android, not Apple Photos or every phone’s gallery app.
- In Google Photos, tap your profile picture → Photos settings → Backup. Switch Backup off for a temporary pause.
- Check the profile’s backup status confirms it is off. Avoid manual uploads or sharing large videos while you are saving data.
- Back on trusted Wi-Fi, switch Backup on again and check the remaining items or completion status. Do not assume a picture visible on your phone has a cloud copy.
Using another traveller’s hotspot?
That connection appears as Wi-Fi on your phone but uses their mobile allowance. A mobile-data-only restriction may therefore allow uploads. Keep automatic backup paused until you have the connection you intend to use. Other apps and devices still share that allowance.
Prefer to keep automatic backup enabled?
Under Backup → Mobile data usage, review the daily backup limit and turn off video backup over data and backup while roaming. These are Google Photos settings: do not switch off the travel eSIM’s required data roaming just to control photos.
The menu is different, or backup will not resume?
Use the Google help below for your app version. Check the account, connection and available cloud storage. Keep your photos; do not delete them or remove the eSIM to save data. Until backup succeeds, protect the phone and keep another safe copy of important files. Buying more eSIM data does not fix a full cloud account or guarantee Google Photos access in China.
Google · Android photo backup settings ↗Check the eSIM balance before buying more →Compare plans for your remaining mobile needs →iCloud Photos is paused. Do I need more eSIM data?
Not necessarily. Check the message in Apple Photos first: low battery, data-saving settings or full iCloud storage can pause syncing. More mobile data will not remove those causes. Keep iCloud Photos enabled while troubleshooting.
Before leaving, check important photos have synced on trusted Wi-Fi. Keep a safe additional copy of irreplaceable files. These steps apply to Apple Photos on iPhone; Google Photos has separate controls.
First, read the library status
Open Photos → Collections → your profile button. Read the status below your name. On iOS 17 or earlier, open Library → All Photos and scroll to the bottom. Layouts vary by version; use Apple’s guide below if yours differs.
Low Data Mode or Low Power Mode
Syncing may pause intentionally. Wait for trusted Wi-Fi and power, then review the relevant mode. Mobile and Wi-Fi Low Data Mode are separate settings. Do not force a large sync over your travel data just to clear a warning.
Low battery, heat or weak connection
Charge the phone, let it cool and use a reliable connection. Follow the displayed message. If offered, use Sync Now only when you are ready for the transfer; completion can take time.
iCloud storage is full
Cloud storage and eSIM data are different allowances. Extra eSIM data does not create iCloud space. Review storage using Apple’s help; do not delete holiday photos merely to make the warning disappear.
Check again before you leave Wi-Fi
Connect to trusted Wi-Fi and power and allow time to sync. Check the library status again; a photo visible on the phone does not establish that syncing finished. If it stays paused, follow the specific Apple status guidance. Do not turn off iCloud Photos or remove the eSIM as a fix.
A companion’s Wi-Fi hotspot still uses their mobile plan. A pause in Photos does not stop other apps or guarantee zero data use. Choose any new eSIM for the mobile use and days you still need, after checking your existing allowance.
Apple · Paused iCloud Photos syncing ↗Apple · Low Data Mode ↗Check your existing eSIM allowance →Compare current China data plans →Keep essential connections available while you check your balance. Reducing background use can help conserve data; it cannot restore an exhausted allowance or extend an expired plan.
Check what is using the data
Look at app usage for the travel SIM and the relevant dates. Pause large uploads, app updates and video downloads. If you share a hotspot, check the connected laptop or phone too.
Reduce background use on your phone
Choose your device below. Then open an essential app and check that it still works as you need. Data-saving settings can delay background updates; they are not a guarantee that no mobile data will be used.
Check the allowance before buying again
Ask us to check your order number and validity if the balance is unclear. Include how many days remain on your trip. Do not send your installation QR code or activation code.
Choose your phone
iPhone: enable Low Data Mode
Choose the travel line, not your home line. Mobile and Wi-Fi Low Data Mode settings are separate.
- Open Settings → Cellular / Mobile Data, then select the travel eSIM.
- Find Low Data Mode. For a 5G line it can be under Mobile Data Options → Data Mode; menus depend on your carrier and iOS version.
- Turn it on, then open an essential app and check that it refreshes. Photo syncing, automatic backups and other background activity can pause.
Apple does not describe an Android-style per-app exception here. If an essential task is interrupted, compare with Low Data Mode off and monitor usage.
Samsung Galaxy: choose Data Saver exceptions
Data Saver limits background mobile data. Give an exception only to an app you need to keep updating.
- Open Settings → Connections → Data usage → Data saver and turn it on.
- Open Allowed to use data while Data saver is on and enable the essential app. Some versions offer Apps → your app → Mobile data → Allow app while Data saver on.
- Open the app and check its behaviour on mobile data. If it still fails, follow the checks below; the exception is not a guarantee of notifications.
The exception allows extra background use. Menu names vary with One UI and model; consult Samsung’s instructions if they differ.
Google Pixel: enable Data Saver
Active apps can still use mobile data. Most background activity is restricted to Wi-Fi unless you allow an exception.
- Open Settings → Network & internet → Data Saver and turn it on.
- For an essential app, open Unrestricted data and enable only the app or service that needs background mobile access.
- Open that app and check it. If updates still arrive late, use the checks below rather than granting every app unrestricted access.
For Pixel Wi-Fi hotspot sharing, Google requires Data Saver off. Pause optional downloads on connected devices instead; all shared usage still counts.
An app only updates when you open it?
- First select the travel eSIM for mobile data and try loading a webpage with Wi-Fi off. If the phone has no internet, use connection troubleshooting below; a Data Saver exception will not fix coverage or an expired plan.
- If browsing works, open the affected app. On Android, review its Data Saver exception below. On iPhone, temporarily switch Low Data Mode off and compare the behaviour. Change one setting at a time and watch usage.
- If it still fails, check the app’s notification, battery and account guidance. Do not delete or reinstall a banking or authentication app as a generic fix. App and regional restrictions can remain even with a working data connection.
After the trip, review any exceptions you added. Resume paused backups and updates on trusted Wi-Fi, and check that they finish. These are manufacturer-based steps, not an OrientPass handset test.
Using hotel Wi-Fi — why is my eSIM data still going down?
Check the time period and the active data line before buying again. A Wi-Fi connection does not establish which connection every app used, and an updated balance may include earlier mobile use.
1. Compare the same period
Note the time, travel line and phone usage reading. Check app usage and any shared hotspot. Your phone counter is an estimate, not the supplier’s remaining balance; ask support to check your order if the figures do not match.
2. Try a Wi-Fi-only check
While safely at your hotel, pause downloads and turn Mobile Data off in phone settings, leaving Wi-Fi on. Open a small webpage. If it fails, resolve the hotel login or connection first. This checks connectivity now, not the cause of earlier usage.
3. Restore the right line before going out
Turn mobile data back on for the travel eSIM when you need it. Keep home-line data roaming and automatic data switching off. Mobile data being off does not disable calls or SMS, or remove your home carrier’s charges.
iPhone: the setting name has changed
Samsung: turn mobile data off for the check
A mainland China hotel’s Wi-Fi uses a different connection from your travel eSIM. An overseas app failing on Wi-Fi does not prove that the eSIM is empty. Keep the profile installed; switching settings cannot return used data or extend validity.
Choose for the days and mobile use you still need, including time outside the hotel. Another purchase is a separate eSIM order, not an automatic top-up of this profile.

Three questions before you choose
How do you normally use your phone?
Check mobile data usage in your phone settings. A comparable period is a starting point, not a guarantee of your travel usage.
Will some days involve lots of video?
Video quality changes data usage. If you often watch or upload videos, pay particular attention to the daily high-speed allowance.
Will you use a hotspot?
Include downloads and background activity on connected devices in your estimate. An extra connection does not provide an extra data plan.
