Does my EU roaming allowance work in the UK?
UK roaming is not automatically covered by EU rules. Your operator may still include it. Check your exact tariff, remaining UK data and any daily charge before buying another eSIM; Swiss contracts also need their own check.
Before departure: ask specifically about the UK
- Find “United Kingdom” in your own tariff, not just “Europe” or “EU”. Ask whether UK use is included or activates a paid daily pass, and which activities trigger that charge. Do not assume your France or Spain allowance applies.
- Check remaining UK data, the renewal date and any separate limit. If your provider offers a travel pass, compare its full cost for your travel dates with a country eSIM; check whether the pass renews or continues charging.
- Save the confirmed terms and installation instructions on Wi-Fi before travel. On arrival, read the provider’s UK welcome SMS before enabling home-line data roaming. If it shows an unexpected price, leave home data roaming off and ask that provider to clarify.
What has your provider confirmed?
My tariff includes enough UK data
You may not need another eSIM. Keep the confirmation, follow your home provider’s settings and monitor your UK allowance. “UK included” must apply to your exact tariff and dates, not just another tariff from the same brand.
UK use costs extra, or my UK data is not enough
Compare the full home-provider pass cost with the current UK plans below. Check your phone first. For an OrientPass eSIM, follow its data-roaming instructions, select it for mobile data, disable automatic mobile-data switching and leave home-line data roaming off. This does not cancel a pass already active with your provider.
My provider only says “EU” or “Europe”
Ask: “Is UK data included in my exact tariff? What starts a daily fee? How many GB can I use, and what happens afterwards?” If connected but without internet, use Wi-Fi to check your selected data line, roaming permission and allowance. An OrientPass purchase cannot undo charges already incurred with your home provider.
My contract is from Germany, Austria or Switzerland

Telekom says many MagentaMobil tariffs treat the UK like an EU country. Confirm your own tariff and UK data allowance; this does not establish the terms of other German operators or every older tariff.

A1 lists the UK among destinations for its additional weekly roaming packages. Their validity follows Austrian time. Check your own tariff’s UK conditions and any active option in Mein A1; an EU allowance alone does not confirm UK inclusion.
- Switzerland · Swisscom example ↗
Swisscom lists the UK in its EU/UK zone, with overseas-territory exclusions. Check your subscription’s included data or the package shown in Cockpit, including validity. A zone list is not a promise that every Swiss subscription has UK data.
What an extra country eSIM will not solve
The OrientPass UK plans below are data-only: no local phone number or SMS. They are not Europe-wide plans and do not list Ireland or the Crown Dependencies as separate covered destinations. Ask support before buying for an island or overseas-territory itinerary. Your home-line calls, SMS and active passes retain their own provider’s conditions.
A UK country plan does not promise coverage on ferries, at sea or in aircraft. Check onboard Wi-Fi separately. If unsure about a ship or aircraft mobile network, use flight mode; home-provider charges may differ from land networks.

How much data do I need for my UK trip?
Check your home plan’s UK allowance first. If you need extra data, estimate your trip from a known usage period, add any extra hotspot use and choose a current UK plan covering both the estimate and your stay.
Check included UK roaming first ↑These are total fixed allowances for the United Kingdom, not a fresh allowance each day. Ireland and other stops are not included in these UK-only offers. An internet exit in another country does not add coverage.
Find a useful usage period first
On iPhone, open Settings → Cellular / Mobile Data, select the data line and check the period since statistics were reset. On Pixel, open Settings → Network & internet → SIMs → App data usage and choose a period. Menu names vary; do not assume a counter covers the last month.
If you cannot identify the period, do not treat the number as a daily average. Use a known period from your home provider or record a new one. Travel video, backups and laptop use may differ from home.

Add only laptop or companion use not already counted in your measured mobile data. Choose its unit and whether the figure is per travel day or for the whole trip. 0 means no extra use; this selection does not turn a total allowance into a daily plan.
This optional reserve is an estimate, not a guarantee that the allowance will last.
Enter a known usage period and trip length. No plan is selected until there is a valid estimate.
First convert MB to GB: this planning tool uses 1 GB = 1,024 MB. Own use = measured GB ÷ measured days × trip days. Daily extra data are multiplied by trip days; a whole-trip total is added once. The optional reserve is 20% of that sum. This is not a billing rule or live balance.
This calculator keeps entries only in this page’s memory. It does not save or send the values automatically; reloading clears them.
What if I use more data than expected?
Check the selected travel line’s usage against your own order’s allowance and start date; the phone counter may differ from the provider’s figure. Pause large uploads and hotspot sharing, save media over reliable Wi-Fi, and use Wi-Fi to contact support if needed. Do not delete the installed eSIM to restore data. A new purchase has its own installation and validity; automatic top-up or transfer of unused data is not promised.
My laptop connects to my UK hotspot but has no internet. Should I buy more data?
Not yet. First check whether a small webpage opens on your phone with Wi-Fi off and your UK travel eSIM selected for mobile data. A laptop joining the hotspot only confirms its connection to the phone, not that mobile internet works. This test uses some data.
The phone cannot open the webpage either
Reconnect to working Wi-Fi. Check the selected UK data line, its roaming instruction, coverage, allowance and validity in your order. Keep home-line data roaming and automatic data switching off unless you deliberately accept your home provider’s terms. Keep the eSIM installed; follow connection help before buying a replacement.
Check the travel data connection →The phone works, but the laptop does not
- Pause laptop downloads, backups and updates while testing. Check that the laptop has joined your phone’s exact hotspot name using its password, rather than hotel or airport Wi-Fi.
- Turn laptop Wi-Fi off and on, then reconnect to that hotspot. Check the phone’s sharing settings below. If needed, restart both devices and test one small webpage again.
- If it still fails, use working Wi-Fi to contact support with your order reference, phone model, laptop system and whether the phone-only test worked. Send details privately; do not post your QR code or hotspot password. For a work laptop, ask your IT team before changing managed network settings.
Check sharing on your phone
iPhone
Open Settings → Personal Hotspot and enable Allow Others to Join. Stay on that screen while the laptop joins, and check the hotspot name and password shown there. If the option is missing, check the exact plan and phone with support; a larger allowance will not create the missing menu.

Open Settings → Network & internet → Hotspot & tethering → Wi-Fi hotspot. Google says Data Saver must be off for Wi-Fi tethering. If you turn it off to test sharing, watch background data use and restore your preferred setting afterwards. Other Android phones can use different menus; check the manufacturer’s guide.

Verified support does not guarantee every laptop, location or work network will connect. Do not delete the eSIM, copy another provider’s APN or reset network settings as a first step.
It works now — do I need a bigger allowance?
If your remaining allowance and validity cover your trip, you may need nothing more. Otherwise include only extra laptop use not already in your phone counter in the estimate above. A new package is a separate purchase with its own installation and validity; it is not an automatic refill or a hotspot repair.
Return to my data estimate ↑Can a USB cable get my laptop online with the UK eSIM?
Yes, on supported device combinations, if mobile internet already works on your phone. USB replaces the phone-to-laptop Wi-Fi link; it does not fix missing mobile coverage or add data. Pixel-to-Mac USB tethering is not supported.
Before travelling, pack a data-capable cable and prepare any required computer software over reliable internet. Select the UK eSIM for mobile data, turn off phone Wi-Fi and check a small webpage. Keep home-line data roaming and automatic data switching off. Pause laptop downloads during the test.
Choose both devices to see the appropriate steps. These instructions apply to iPhone and Google Pixel; check your manufacturer for other Android phones.
Check the connection before buying more data
- After connecting, temporarily disconnect the laptop from other Wi-Fi or Ethernet connections if you can safely do so. Load a small webpage to check the tethered connection; charging or seeing the phone in Finder does not prove internet access. This test uses some data.
- If the phone works but USB does not, check the cable can transfer data and follow the linked manufacturer troubleshooting. On a managed laptop, contact your IT team before installing software or changing network settings. Use trusted Wi-Fi for support if needed; keep your eSIM installed.
- If it works, stop tethering when finished: turn off Personal Hotspot or USB tethering and unplug the cable. Otherwise the laptop may reconnect when you charge the phone. Existing remaining data may be enough; buying another plan does not repair tethering.
USB uses the same UK data allowance as your phone. It does not include an extra laptop allowance, extend validity, guarantee speed or add coverage in Ireland. Check only additional laptop use in the estimator to avoid counting it twice.
